Fashion Trends Derived from Films and TV Series

Fashion industry is dynamic, and it takes ideas from everywhere. For instance, some of the trends are derived from history, some others take the films and TV series as their source, and some others get the idea from other trends available on the internet. There are a number of trends, which are based on the styles of the films. Pirate, steampunk and gothic – these are three popular trends, which take inspiration from the films.

Pirate Fashion: A number of films and games inspire the pirate fashion trend of today up to a great extent. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie series is one of the best sources of this fashion in the present scenario. The pirate shirts, pants and other dresses of this series are widely popular among the people of the recent times. Captain Jack Sparrow, the protagonist of the film, inspires the clothing styles of people a lot. The Jack Sparrow style outfits are not only popular among the men, but also among several women also. Some special costumes are designed for the women also in the styles of Sparrow. Moreover, the outfits of other characters of the film are also available in the market, which include Angelica costumes, Elizabeth costumes and so on. Various pirate style dresses are inspired by the outfits of historical freebooters also.

Steampunk Fashion: A number of films as well as TV series have been composed on the science fiction. Among these films, the Victorian science fiction movies have gained huge popularity. The Victorian science fiction is termed as steampunk because of the fact that all the technologies are run through the steam power in these films. The logic behind using the steam power in these films is that the Victorian Era was the period of steam engines; therefore, steam was the prominent source of energy. Steampunk has gained the inspiration from the novels of the Victorian authors such as H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. The outfits inspired by these films are known as steampunk dresses. Some of the popular steampunk films include The Time Machine (2002), The Time Machine (1960), War of the Worlds, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Steamboy, The City of Lost Children and more. The Wild Wild West, Tin Man and The Secret Adventurer of Jules Verne etc. are some popular steampunk TV series.

Gothic Fashion: Today’s gothic fashion is not same as that of the pre-medieval Goths. It is based on the gothic culture that is going on in different countries since 1980s, behind which various gothic films are responsible up to a great extent. The gothic films are based on themes like ghosts, vampires, supernatural events and the extreme capabilities of science and technology. This trend was started with Horace Walpole’s novel written in 1764 – The Castle of Otranto. Thereafter, it flourished in the Victorian era with the novels like Dracula written in 1897 by Beam Stoker. Following this trend, a number of films and mini-series have been made on the gothic trends. Some of the popular gothic films include Gothika, Rebecca, Nosferatu, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Suspiria and more. On the other hand,  several mini-series has also been made on the gothic themes. American Gothic is one of the most popular television shows based on this theme. Some of the gothic dresses are similar to the pirate costumes, because of their dark shades and horrifying skull designs.
